This year’s travel party for the women’s basketball trip to Butler University had some notable additions.
For the second consecutive year, select donors, members of the Providentia Society, and women’s basketball alumnae joined the team on their chartered flight to Indianapolis.
“I think it’s important for donors to see how hard our women work,” said head women’s basketball coach Erin Batth. The trip gave the travelers a 24-hour sneak peek of what goes into student athletes’ daily schedule as they compete at the national level.
During this behind-the-scenes experience, attendees had the opportunity to meet Coach Batth and her staff, eat dinner with the team, and sit courtside for the game — where the Friars were victorious. The generosity of guests on the trip made a tangible impact for student athletes, and is laying the foundation for their continued success.
“Coach Batth is the kind of person who, if you meet her for about 30 seconds, you’ll feel like you’ve been friends with her for 30 years,” says Jeff Shea ’94. He and his wife Cheryl (Amaral) Shea ’94 are women’s basketball season ticket holders and frequent attendees at special donor events, which has led to a special relationship with Coach Batth. “We’re lucky to have her in charge, and I can’t wait to see where she takes the program.”
“It’s really great to keep the alumni base growing, and I am encouraging them to come back to campus to attend some games and support the women’s basketball team,” said Maddie (Jolin) Patno ’19, a former basketball standout for the Friars. She now serves as director of business operations for the Providence College Athletic Department.
Donors on the trip came together to raise more than $50,000 for women’s basketball, raising critical funds to support the team. “Having them around makes a huge difference to support our program,” said Coach Batth.
