Faith, Family, and Friartown

For the Barry family, Providence College is more than a place of learning—it’s a place of healing, faith, and transformation. When Jonathon Barry ’19 transferred to PC after a difficult start elsewhere, he found a community that embraced him with open arms. Through his time on the hockey and lacrosse teams, and with the spiritual guidance of Rev. James Cuddy, O.P. ’98, Jonathon rediscovered his footing. “Friartown gave me a second chance,” he says. “It changed my life.” That experience inspired the Barrys to give back—not just financially, but through their time, presence, and unwavering support of the Friar community.

Their generosity is deeply rooted in gratitude. John Barry ’19P, ’25P recalls how Fr. Cuddy played a pivotal role in helping Jonathon through a challenging time, offering guidance and compassion that extended beyond the classroom or chapel. When Fr. Cuddy was transferred, Rev. Dominic M Verner O.P., athletic department chaplain and assistant professor of theology stepped in, continuing that legacy of care and connection. The Barry family’s ongoing involvement—from golf tournaments to faith-based initiatives—reflects their desire to ensure others experience the same sense of belonging and renewal that changed their lives.

To Vice President/Athletic Director, Steven R. Napolillo, the Barrys represent the very best of Providence College. “They inspire me as a parent, as a Friar, and as a leader,” he says. Their belief in education, faith, and community service aligns perfectly with the college’s mission. By giving back, the Barrys are not only honoring the impact PC had on their lives—they’re helping shape a future where every student can find the same hope, support, and purpose Jonathon did.
